Reading and Reviews (Evanovich and Jance)

I'm an author, but I'm also a reader. From time to time, I'll share my reviews of present and past reads. My available time to read is limited because I write, but I love to curl up with a paperback or an eBook at night for the last hour of my day.

I tend to read what I write, but not exclusively. Besides Romantic Suspense and mystery, I read crime and law novels, once in a while a true story, WWII historicals, romance, and mainstream character driven books.

Here are some of the books I've read recently or in the not-too-distant past. Maybe you'll discover a new book or author.

Look Alive Twenty-Five: A Stephanie Plum Novel by Janet Evanovich

There's nothing like a good deli, and the Red River Deli in Trenton is one of the best. World-famous for its pastrami, cole slaw, and for its disappearing managers. Over the last month, three have vanished from the face of the earth, and the only clue in each case is one shoe that's been left behind. The police are baffled. Lula is convinced that it's a case of alien abduction. Whatever it is, they'd better figure out what's going on before they lose their new manager, Ms. Stephanie Plum.

My Review:

It’s been a while since I’ve read a Stephanie Plum novel. How odd it took me a couple of chapters to actually start enjoying it. I like her character Lulu, but the book started out being more about her than anything else. But true to form for Ms. Evanovich, it finally took off offering plenty of laughs, sighs at the two hunks Stephanie keeps company with, and an entertaining read.

Desert Heat (Joanna Brady Mysteries Book 1) by J. A. Jance

A cop lies dying beneath the blistering Arizona sun—a local lawman who may well have become the next sheriff of Cochise County. The police brass claim that Andy Brady was dirty, and that his shooting was a suicide attempt. Joanna Brady, his devoted wife and mother of their nine-year-old daughter, knows a cover-up when she hears one . . . and murder when she sees it. But her determined efforts to hunt down an assassin and clear her husband's name are placing Joanna and her surviving family in harm's way—because in the desert, the one thing more lethal than a rattler's bite . . . is the truth.

My Review:

Being from Arizona, I could identify with the heat and the small-town obstacles Joanna Brady encounters. I know that those readers who aren’t familiar with Arizona will get a good visual. The characters are well-defined and the story is just twisty enough. Joanna is tough enough, but relatable, for a new widow who wants answers. I’m glad I started with book one to see how it all began. I’ll look forward to the rest of the series. Jance is up to 11.

Fearless Friday Character Story by Amber Daulton

FEARLESS FRIDAY

Okay, Readers, this is one fun Fearless Friday guest post. Welcome Amber Daulton to Discover... She's brought the heroine of her new book with her. How exciting to hear a tale directly from the character's mouth. So in addition to Amber, let's welcome Carmen Lozano.

Hello, everyone. I’m Carmen Lozano, the heroine from Amber Daulton’s dark romance novel, Dark Hearts Aflame. Today, I’m going to talk about redemption.

My story starts before I was born, when my criminal father married my ambitious beauty queen mother. He was the leader of a powerful cartel and had scores of brutal enforcers at his fingertips to do his bidding. His lavish lifestyle provided everything my siblings and I could want—exotic pets, expensive clothes, wild vacations, and all the top gadgets. We had it all—except for our parents’ love. The price of all that useless material stuff was blood. Death. Destruction. Humiliation. Fear. Misery. I could go on and on, but I don’t want this post to be about a whiny little rich girl.

Let’s move forward to when my father sold me into marriage to one of his capos. For five long years, I turned a blind eye to my husband’s activities, which ranged from drug running, rape, and murder. Then I snapped. I couldn’t take it anymore. Miraculously, I managed to escape and took refuge with an anti-cartel resistance group. There, I found freedom, my passion, a chance to do something good with my life. I learned from the nurses and medics that volunteered at the rebel base, and after a while, I was the go-to person called upon to extract bullets, sew up wounds, administer life-saving injections, and things like that. Far too often, rebel soldiers would be injured while fighting with the cartel in our backyard, so medics were a godsend. For the first time in my life, I felt like a decent person in helping others. I found real friends, a family of sorts. Then my past caught up with me.

I never thought I would see Bristol Rieger again. Back when I was a child, he was an up-and-coming enforcer in my father’s inner circle. I had a crush on him, but since he was seven years older than me, nothing ever happened between us. Now, I’m all grown up. When circumstances thrust us together, we have to go on the run to survive. My life as a healer was over, or so I thought, but I crave redemption as much as I do love and peace. After all the horrible things I’ve seen and brushed aside out of fear for my own safety, I’m done hiding in the shadows. I’m a strong, fearless woman. Whether I use my words, my fists, or my ability to heal, I will no longer stand aside while an innocent person is in danger. My soul cannot take anymore needless death.

Bristol says I have nothing to seek redemption for, that I was a victim trapped in a horrible situation. Maybe he’s right. Maybe not. I need to atone for the sins of my family, and the only way I’ve found to do that is to help the kind of people my family seeks to destroy—the innocents, the weak, the downtrodden.

So that’s my story. It’s not pretty, but it’s real. Thankfully, it has a happy ending. Bristol and I are crazy, madly in love. While I’m still working as a medic, he’s seeking his own redemption to try to wash the blood from his hands. We have a long way to go, but we’re in it for long haul.

Want to know more? Read Dark Hearts Aflame. You won’t be disappointed.

*****

A drug lord on the run. A cartel princess in hiding. All it takes is a spark to set their world ablaze.

Bristol Rieger left his criminal life behind for a fresh start in Mexico. Flying under the radar of the government and the cartels alike, his best-laid plans go awry when a woman from his narco days discovers his whereabouts. Carmen Lozano, however, is no longer the innocent girl he remembers.

Carmen escaped the chains of her tiara and her abusive marriage to join a group of resistance fighters. The last thing she expected was the now-retired capo setting out to seduce her with his wicked touch. Embracing the blood on his hands is easy, but his secrets wear on her patience.

When their enemies close in, Bristol will have to summon his inner monster to protect her. But can that monster be tamed again?

Excerpt:

Bristol sighed, more angry with himself than with her. “Believe me when I say I wish we could have more. Just trust me and know we can’t. It’s for your safety.”

Carmen slowed to a stop and trailed her index finger over the line of his jaw.

The resignation in her eyes scorched him.

“Your mind is like stone. If you never tell me your secrets, the truth you think I will not understand or accept, then it’s your loss. Not mine.” She notched her chin. “I know my worth, Bristol. Maybe I can do better than you. Maybe not, but at least I’m happy with you, and that’s all I ever wanted. So fine, keep your secrets. Someday, if I’m safe enough, I will find a man who can trust me implicitly and love me without reservation. When that happens, I hope your secrets will keep you warm at night because I’ll be gone.”

Though he intended to let her go, the idea of losing her almost cracked his knees on the floor. He had to protect her, but what about her heart? And his? He couldn’t push her into the arms of another man. He wanted—needed—her for himself. Bristol pulled her close and kissed her, desperate to feel her soft lips with his firmer ones and her tight body in his arms.

She opened her mouth, inviting his plunder. Her scent invaded his nostrils. Her sweet, delectable taste rolled through him, seeking to claim him.

After three days of starvation, he needed more. How could he survive three years? Thirty years? He couldn’t do this anymore, couldn’t keep quiet. He wanted her to be happy, yet the idea of some other man giving her everything she deserved sickened him to his core.

“Let’s go, Carmen. I have something to tell you.”

Muse Monday Philosophy with Sandra Holiday

 MUSE MONDAY

After two failed marriages and countless relationships, years of less than perfect choices that derailed her travel-related career and left her single and broke, Sandra Holiday still approaches life with humor. And she has her own brand of philosophical musings. I'd like to welcome the main character of my latest release (eBook is on preorder and print is available now) Sleeping with the Lights On to Muse Monday on Discover...

Me: Hi Sandra. I'm wondering if you'd share a few of your wisdoms from your story.

Sandra: I'd be happy to. I'm not sure how wise I am, but as a fifty-year-old woman, I do have some experience tucked away.

From my own experience, I know nights are the worst time to be alone. The dark quiet intensifies your isolation. Instead of folding around you like a soft cocoon, the dark is endless nothingness, leaving you feeling exposed and vulnerable. It’s best to sleep with the lights on.

Daddy said sex was ninety-percent of any good relationship. My mother and father were married fifty-eight years. Until he died. But Daddy hadn’t explained the other ten-percent. I happened to think the other ten-percent kept them together so long. Having been married twice, not to mention countless relationships, I had to admit the left-over ten-percent had been elusive for me.

People often say, if I only knew then what I know now. I say, if I’d known as much then, I would’ve avoided way too much and wouldn’t know now what I know. Nor would I have been where I found myself that morning—the object of affection by a man I’d yet to fully discover on a lazy spring morning. I had to believe my future held some good possibilities.

The fact he resembled my favorite Beatle, George, and I Got My Mind Set On You played from his jukebox when we met, may seem like a coincidence. But there are no coincidences. Regardless of the song having been written years before we met, it existed for us. Things like that happen. The energy of ideas lives in a timeless medium and will come together at the right moment.

Thanks for having me, Brenda. I hope your readers will enjoy the story you wrote for me. They can buy the book here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F4M25SR6

Life's Adventures: The Daily Grind

Blogging. Life's Adventures. I haven't had any momentous adventures lately. At one time, I thought maybe recounting the daily push of being an author could be of interest. I keep a daytimer with my list of to-dos. Hmm... I'll think on it. I did make note of a few days at the beginning of last year. Maybe I'll drop in my daily routine from time to time.

Create QR codes for promotional handouts.

Done. Yay. Now when I do book fairs and someone wants an eBook instead of print, I can hand them my post card or business card with the link to find my books using a QR code on their phone.

Reevaluate all of Gaughran’s webinars and emails I’ve saved to determine if I want to invest the time in listening and reading them.

I know I need to. David Gaughran is one smart guy when it comes to marketing. I’ve read two of his books. No time today. Push it forward

The Amazon Ad Class I took all last week – files are closing today if I missed any

Done. Huff and puff, I skimmed through all 6 because, yeah, I didn’t look at them last week. It is much of what I already know but there were a few gems I will review in a few days.

Pay personal bills

Done and paid and logged into the spreadsheet in my computer.

Get set up in Payson with a primary care doctor on my new insurance.

No time today. I’ll call on another day

Call GoDaddy, my domain provider for my website, regarding authentication of my email and website so my newsletters don’t get bounced.

The writing community is going crazy over this. I have NO idea what it is, but I thought I should pursue it. Hold time was 46 minutes. I just can’t worry about it today

Day One of getting back on weight lifting

Done!

January 30, 2024

2:30 AM awoke with a pinching pain in my chest

I got back to sleep around 3:30. Up again at 6:00. Only ½ mile walk. So sleepy.

Find out why no reviews on Amazon for Amanda in the Summer

Spent nearly an hour on texting with Amazon to no avail. I finally said forget it. I’ll try another day and disconnected.

Make sure Amanda in the Summer is on BookFunnel, BookBub, and GoodReads

Done. BB and GR had it already. I uploaded a copy to BookFunnel so I can give a free copy to my newsletter subscribers in February.

Upload the corrected copy of A Legacy of Love and Murder to Amazon

Done. Found a small mistake. This is the free book my newsletter subscribers can have.

Start revising Amazon Ads

I’m still fuzzy headed from the lack of sleep with the chest pain thing. Push this forward

Read advice from a fellow author on Amazon Ads saved in email of 11/20/2023

Too fuzzy headed. Push this forward

Sort of Done. I managed a couple. I need sleep.

Edit Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder

Done. Ah, yes. This was relaxing and fun. I put in a couple of hours. I am so excited to get this third book in the Chocolate Martini Sisters Mysteries published in April.

Remind FDW to call the VA billing department

Done! Suckers are overbilling us for his prescriptions.

Defrost the small refrigerator

I couldn’t face it today. Push it off until tomorrow

January 31, 2024

Looking back on pushed forward items:

I dug into defrosting the fridge. We let it go so long it took me all day…done!

The chest pain kind of scared me so I set my butt down and got set up with a primary care doctor in Payson. But I’m fine, you know. Done!

Still not enough time to delve into Gaughran’s advice.

Found the online chat feature for GoDaddy and spent 45 minutes getting my domain authenticated. I guess. It’s all Greek to me. (Update: days later discovered I am still a fail on one aspect. I tried MailChimp and couldn’t get a response. I tried GoDaddy again and had to give up that day after a half hour since I had an appointment. Still unresolved. This kind of stuff gives me a major headache.)

Searched in KDP and Author Central for who to help me to get my Amanda in the Summer reviews to show on Amazon. Hit dead ends on both sites. Push it forward yet again

I got halfway through revising Candy, Cigarettes, and Murder ads on Amazon. I can see this is going to take a while…like weeks. I also need more knowledge beyond what I learned in the Amazon Ad class. I purchased Publisher Rocket. FDW has committed to helping me. Yay!

Done!

Edit Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder

Aw, yes, again. I’ll be at this for the next week and a half. These hours are truly my enjoyable time.

February1, 2024

I need a break after those last 3 days of January. FDW and I headed north for lunch and shopping in Pine. Elk roaming through town, a hippie shop full of fun stuff to walk down memory lane, delicious fudge and coffee, and a lunch in a high-country café. A satisfying adventure.

Books, Books, More Books

I have long been a catalog shopper. I find it relaxing and easy to flip through pages, then retrace my virtual steps to compare my findings. I love book stores, but on line catalogs grouped by genre are really fun too. I have three great offerings here, and my books are in all of them. I hope you find some new books and new authors to keep you entertained.

Kris Bock shares the first Reluctant Psychic #mystery and a Breakfast Burrito #recipe

I'm always happy to have Kris Bock on Discover... This time she really satisfies me with a fun, new book and the best recipe. I LOVE Mexican food and mystery! Enjoy.

The Reluctant Psychic Mysteries: Petra Cloch can touch an object and sense the emotions people have left behind. She avoids friendships so she won’t need to explain her gift or feel like a voyeur. Now she’s starting a new job at a quirky private museum in a small New Mexico town.

A Stone Cold Murder opens with Petra cleaning her new office. The man who previously held her job died suddenly, leaving behind personal items and shelves of mineral samples that aren't on display. When Petra picks up a cluster of crystals, her psychic powers overwhelm her with flashes of rage and fear. The rock was clearly used as a weapon. Everyone says her predecessor died in a car crash, but what if he was murdered? If he died because of the job, she could be next.

Petra usually avoids making personal connections, because her psychic powers make it awkward. But she needs to know what happened in order to protect herself. Her friendly coworkers—too friendly? – make it easy to get involved in the community. A transplant from Seattle, Petra soon learns about the joys of southwestern food, the benefits and challenges of small town life, and the danger of whatever she's stumbled into.

Learn more or order The Reluctant Psychic Mystery series, available in ebook and print at all major retailers.

New Mexicans love their green chile, which comes slathered over almost any dish. The official state question is “Red or Green?” – which version of the chile sauce do you want? Despite what spell check thinks, I’m not talking about chili, which is a stew that may contain beans and/or meat. Rather, chile refers to chopped or puréed New Mexico chile peppers, possibly cooked in broth with some onion and garlic.

You can buy green chile or green chile sauce in some grocery stores. The 505 brand is good. You can also try salsa or other fresh hot peppers. Poblano (also called pasilla) peppers are a find substitute.

These books don't include recipes, but here is something Petra might have tried in her new town.

Breakfast Burrito

2 bacon strips per person

1/2 cup hash browns per person

2 eggs per person

Salt and pepper to taste

Green chile to taste (or salsa if you can’t find green chile)

1 (8-inch) flour tortilla per person

1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese per person

Extra red or green chile sauce (optional)

  1. Use your favorite method to cook the bacon until crisp. Drain, reserving 1-2 tablespoons drippings.
  2. Add the hash browns to the bacon drippings in a skillet at medium heat. Cook until browned.
  3. Lightly beat the eggs with salt and pepper. Add to the skillet. Mix in the green chile and stir until the eggs are set.
  4. Divide the egg mixture between the tortillas, spooning it down the center.
  5. Sprinkle cheese and bacon over eggs.
  6. Fold the tortilla into a burrito. Eat it out of hand, or smother the burrito with red or green chile sauce and eat it with a knife and fork.

 Options:

  • Use crumbled, cooked sausage, cubed ham, carne adovada (pork cooked with red chile), or chorizo instead of the bacon. Try different cheeses. Or make a veggie version with sautéed mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and diced tomatoes.
  • For a group, you can let people add their own choice of meat, cheese, and veggie.
  • You can make a large batch, wrap each burrito in waxed paper and aluminum foil, and freeze for up to a month. To heat, remove the foil and place the waxed paper-wrapped burritos on a plate. Microwave at 60% power until hot, about 1 to 2 minutes.

Learn more or order The Reluctant Psychic Mystery series, available in ebook and print at all major retailers.

Snippet:

Liberty sat at a table and was the first to glance over at me. She smiled and waved me into the room. Haven’s glance followed the gesture to me, and she grinned.

I got a weird feeling. Like . . . people were happy to see me? And I enjoyed it?

I liked Haven and Liberty. I might enjoy being friends with them—assuming, of course, neither of them were murderers. But even taking murder out of the equation, friendship was hard with a secret like mine. When did you tell people? How would they react? But maybe if we got to know each other as coworkers . . .

Readers say:

“The prose is sharp, the mystery is addictive, and Petra’s journey is one I won’t forget. If you love atmospheric thrillers with a deeply human core, you need this book.”

“Petra is such a compelling lead. Her psychometry isn’t just a plot device—it’s a curse that’s shaped her entire life... And her journey from isolation to finally letting people in? Perfection.”

“The depiction of the small-town environment is so vivid that I could almost sense the dust in the museum and feel the heat of the desert. The mystery itself is exceptionally well-crafted.”

Kris Bock writes mystery, suspense, and romance, often with Southwestern landscapes. In the Accidental Detective humorous mystery series, a witty journalist solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning fifty. The Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series features the employees and customers at a cat café. Watch as they fall in love with each other and shelter cats. In the Accidental Billionaire Cowboys series, a Texas ranching family wins a fortune in the lottery and find out winning the lottery causes as many problems as it solves. Kris’s romantic suspense novels include stories of treasure hunting, archaeology, and intrigue.

Sign up for the Kris Bock newsletter and get an Accidental Detective short story and other freebies. Then every two weeks, you’ll get fun content about pets, announcements of new books, sales, and more.
