“Do you hold sway with Detective Hakata like you do Rodney?” Lydia’s mischievous smile matched her teasing tone. “Friend to friend?”

Nic gazed on the colorful paintings of peacocks and Indian dancers on the far wall while seeming to consider how much influence she had over either man. “Yes and no. Ken was a wealth of information on our first venture into sleuthing. He became more tight-lipped on the following two cases. Because of Dawg.”

Her aunt blinked several times, not understanding. “A dog was involved?”

Nic joined Emma in laughter. “Guthrie’s nickname around the station is Bulldog. He’s a ferocious detective, although I’m doubtful he knows he has a nickname. Not the sort of thing he’d appreciate. Em and I shortened it to D-A-W-G. Dawg.”

Lydia clapped her hands. “Love it!” She chuckled. “So, he’s the dog, but he’s got his sidekick on a short leash.”

“Ha. Good one, Auntie.” Emma dabbed her lips with a napkin. “Guthrie didn’t like our interference on the first case. We were instrumental in leading him to the killer and, most likely, poked his ego.”

Life's Adventures: Trips and Trauma

This summer has been a real mixed bag of highs and lows. 

On the high side, one of my books was chosen for a BookBub Featured Deal. Now that was a trip. I've tried numerous times, but they only let 20% of the submission pay the outrageous price for the one day ad. The thing is, that one day equals lots of exposure. This is the book: The Art of Love and Murder, Wild Horse Peaks book 1 

On the low side, our granddaughter is preteen and not inclined to spend a week with us on her summer break. 

On the high side, she loves spending time with us in general so we snatched her for a day of fun in Phoenix. 

And another high side, is she and I had a girl day of shopping and laziing around a hotel that night. 

We talked and laughed so much.

On the low side, FDW had to schedule numerous medical appointments for an upcoming surgery.

On the high side, we managed a trip for a hotel stay and dinner at a very fun place in Scottsdale. This interactive dinner show has locations all over the U.S. I recommend them. Kind of pricy, the food is good, and the
show is fun. 

You get to cheer for your knight in armor too! Ours won.

On the high side, got my trip to Prescott for a chocolate martini with my sister to celebrate her birthday.

On the low side, FDW's shoulder replacement surgery was a miserable day. We were the first ones in at 6 a.m. and the last ones out at 4:00 p.m. Little things like the bloc didn't take so the pain was off the charts when he woke up. They shot him up with opioids which he has reactions to. They finally gave him a second bloc which took. But about the time he was relaxing with less pain, the opioid reactions set in and he was sick. 

On the high side, the reactions passed. The surgeon said the new shoulder looks great. All went well. So...all will be great in a few months.

On the low side, since his right arm is out of commission, I am doing all those things he normally does around here. Wow! Do I need this guy.

On the high side, my exhaustion and grumpiness is temporary. We're heading into the last day of summer. If you haven't heard...I HATE SUMMER. But yes, it is on the way out.

Life's Adventures: A Birthday Celebration

My sister and I have an adventure twice a year when we enjoy a chocolate martini, once in the spring for her birthday and again in the fall for my birthday at the Hassayampa Inn in Prescott, Arizona in the saloon called the Peacock Room. This tradition is what led to the cozy mystery series I’m writing with co-author Joyce Proell. 

You might not consider sharing chocolate martinis to celebrate a birthday as an adventure, but we've met so many fun people and discovered some interesting tidbits about the town, the saloon, and our imagination. We never know what adventure awaits us...but can always count on the great martinis that Huck creates.

Our fictional Chocolate Martini Sisters are Emma (Em) Banefield and Nicole (Nic) Earp. Nic's second ex-husband, Rodney Earp, is a distant cousin to the famous Earp brothers. The sisters find a lot more murder and mayhem at the Dulce Inn in our fictional town of Wyatt, Arizona than my sister and I find in the Peacock Room!

Nic is the younger sister and prone to jumping to conclusions when she and Em are following the clues to catch the murderer. Em is an analytical sleuth, more cautious than Nic. Both sisters are keen observers and love to people-watch. Nic is a freelance travel writer and ex-teacher, carefree and arty in her style. She loves hats. Em’s style is classic. As of soon-to-be published book 4, Nic has gone into business...a yoga studio. Em is now a published author. But chasing killers and solving the crime still takes up much of their time.

In the next couple of months, we'll be rolling out book 4, Birds, Puppies, and Murder. In the meantime, if you haven't read books 1-3...well...why not?

Sisters Fearlessly Find the Killer by Joyce Proell

So it makes sense after reading countless mysteries, a person would develop favorites. I’d like to share a few of mine with you. Since mystery covers a broad area, I’ve narrowed my choices to the cozy series category. Here goes…

Elizabeth Peter’s Amelia Peabody – The series begins in 1880 where an independent and unmarried woman uses her inheritance to travel to Egypt to further her knowledge of antiquities. Elizabeth Peters, a former doctor of Egyptology, knows her stuff. She had a marvelous sense of humor, especially as she describes Amelia’s later husband and son, Ramses. Amelia is practical and single-minded in her pursuit of killers. When she finds herself in a threatening bind, there’s always her umbrella on hand to solve the problem. The first book in the series is Crocodile on the Sandbank.  

Victoria Thompson’s Gaslight Mysteries – Set in 1895 New York, the series features Sarah Brandt, a compassionate, tough-minded, justice seeking widow of a doctor. As a midwife, she goes into the seediest of tenements in a time where the rich often turn a blind eye to injustice and murder. Murder on Astor Street is the first book in the series.

Rhy Bowen’s Her Royal Spyness – Set in 1932, a time of economic depression when people struggled to feed their families, Lady Georgina or Georgie, cousin to George V and thirty-fourth in line to the throne, finds herself not so different than the masses. When her brother cuts off her inheritance, she must find a job—a daunting task when her education taught her few practical skills—a perfect curtsey being one of them. But Georgie is nothing if not kind, likable and determined to be self-reliant. However, a tumultuous childhood and a self-absorbed mother have dented her confidence. As she struggles in charming fashion to set her life in order, she stumbles upon a murder. The person most surprised when the killer is caught is Georgie herself, the solver of the crime. The series begins with Her Royal Spyness.  

MC Beaton’s Agatha Raisin – After building a successful career in public relations, Agatha retires at fifty-two moving from London to a quiet, picturesque village. Only the place isn’t as tranquil as if first appears. The boredom of retirement doesn’t suit her temperament. In no time, she’s discovered a murder. With fashionable style, she throws herself into the job of solving the crime. Along the way, she meets and, more often than not, offends the locals with her abrasive manner. At first, I found Agatha’s personality off-putting, but in successive books, came to see the humanity and frailty behind her bossiness. The Quiche of Death is the first book in the series.

Spenser Quinn’s Chet and Bernie – These are the only books I’ve read narrated by a dog. Chet is a big, lovable mutt who absolutely adores Bernie, a private detective. In Chet’s view, Bernie can do no wrong. He is the best! The smartest! The most fearless! Chet likes the exclamations. If you are a dog lover, listening to Chet’s narrative will make you laugh. Spenser Quinn absolutely nails dog thought. In addition to solving crimes, Chet has a number of friends in the neighborhood. Their get-togethers are hilarious. For a fun time, read It’s a Wonderful Woof!

Summertime sucks the creativity out of me. I guess I should qualify that statement by adding Arizona summertime. The heat makes it hard for me to think. With the advent of the monsoons spiking the humidity, I'm darn near comatose.

But...the book must go on. Luckily, I have a co-author partner in the midwest who keeps me barreling ahead. When Joyce sends me a chapter, I can't ignore my duty. Truth is, the writing keeps me sane. I can block out the misery of summer when I am fully ensconsed in the lovely, cooler town of Wyatt, Arizona. Not to say I'm not having to scrape up my Muse from a melted puddle on the floor from time to time.

This fourth book in the Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery books will be Puppies, Yoga, and Murder. We've got puppy snatchers, yoga classes, and of course murder for sisters Em and Nic to handle. Here's a peek. These are the first few sentences of the latest mystery adventure:

Nic glanced at the time in the corner of her computer screen. “Where on earth did this day go?” Springing from her desk chair, she hit send on the travel article she’d written. Then froze. Should she have proofed it one more time? “Gah, don’t be neurotic.”

That doesn't give you much hint into the mayhem and murder to come. Okay, one more peek:

Emma shirked back from the bushes and halted her quizzical aunt’s advance with a raised hand. “Stop.” A shiver raced up her spine. A dead body. Ugh.

That's all the hints I can give. Besides, I'm up for writing chapter five, and I need to get back to it before Joyce catches me.

Although we live nearly 2,000 miles apart, we’re good friends and avid writing partners. We met when we both lived in Minnesota. This writing partnership now spans the Midwest to the West.

The Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery Series was born in an historical bar in a real-life western town in Arizona. With nothing but a title and a vague storyline, I wanted to venture into the cozy mystery world. I approached Joyce with my idea. That’s all it took. She was off and running. She is my synopsis hero. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoy writing them with my partner in murder and mayhem.

Although summer doesn't officially start for another three weeks, here in Tonto Basin, Arizona, it's started for me. True, we haven't hit triple digits yet, but it's only days away. I've opened the calendar, and I'm making plans to be away from here as much as possible.

I should get FDW to take me to the lake this week before it's too awfully hot. I prefer Apache Lake, and I don't really care about fishing anymore. A couple of hours sightseeing and eating a packed lunch will do me just fine. Should we take Amigo? That's an adventure I can do without. The dog refuses to stay on the boat and whines incessantly if he can't be in the water.

The first week of June, we'll be dog sitting for the kids which means Phoenix. No cooler, but their place is bigger with a super AC so we can spread

out and chill. Plus, I won't be tempted to clean or do any of those other things that drag my efforts away from writing. Book four in the Chocolate Martini Sisters Mysteries is begging to be written. I've got a book of Christmas short stories on the burner too.

The third week of June we'll head to cooler Prescott and stay in "the cabin" at my sister's. Her hubs did a fantastic job of building a little getaway on their property, and sis put her usual artsy touches to it. This will be the first of many stays this summer. It's bare bones but we have full run

of the main house too. It's our anniversary so we'll be taking in a concert and dinner in quaint Prescott.

July is still sketchy. I have book events, doc appointments, and trips penciled in, but I'll wait to see what adventures we can ink.

August is birthday month...I will soon be making plenty of plans to get out of the heat and celebrate me!

I don't know if all authors enjoy putting a face to their characters, I mean a face outside of what's in their heads. I don't like using people on my covers. Giving readers a preconceived idea of what a character looks like takes away some of the joy of reading, in my opinion. If I do my job, paint the picture, create my characters so they conjure visions in the readers' heads, how much more fun. And more than likely, from one reader to the next, they could possibly "see" the characters differently.

But as an aid for writing, and for fun, I search out famous or well known individuals to put a face to my character. I thought it would be fun to share with you some of the characters Joyce and I visualize for our Chocolate Martini Sisters cozy mysteries. 

First off the sisters. Joyce writes in the POV of Emma (Em) Banefield. My sister is Nicole (Nic) Earp. We each chose the likeness of our POV sister. Joyce chose Carrie Coon:

Em is actually mid-forties so age Carrie just a little in your imagination.

I chose Laura Linney (also mid-forties) for the likeness of Nic: 
Book 3, Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder will release in April, not March as first planned. We have some real characters in this story. Bettina Mayweather is a bit of a wacko:

With an expected release date in March, Joyce and I are heavy on the editing stage for Cornbread, Ribs, and Murder, the third book of the Chocolate Martini Sisters Mysteries. Editing is not nearly as sexy as writing...it's more like slugging through the trenches. Here's the latest from Joyce:

I checked overused words. 

This is my list: gaze (48) move (57) bring, brought, purse, pull, press, reach, went (43) saw (56) felt, watched, thought (123), noticed, knew,

heard (51), decided, and realized. Except for the numbered words, the rest were in the low digits. Did replace/reduce some of the frequently used. BUT was used 312 x. THAT used 274. As I went along, I changed up some that, but ha ha didn't touch the buts. 

Now, the manuscript is back in my court for the next round. No doubt I'll find some words that hit me as overused, but what other stumbling blocks? Maybe...but.

The Mysterious Waukau #recipe

Back by popular demand! My cozy mystery writing partner for The Chocolate Martini Sisters Mysteries has a terrific recipe that appeared during our blog tour for the first book, Candy, Cigarettes, and Murder. I've been asked to share it again, so here it is. Thanks, Joyce!

Years ago, a sibling was kind enough to share with me his recipe for a raspberry pancake called a Waukau. I was intrigued with the unfamiliar name. Waukau? Was the word European or Native American? Curious, I prepared the batter following the simple directions. Once in the oven, a golden pancake arose, its edges crusty and slightly browned and filled the kitchen with a delicious aroma. Spread across the top like scarlet jewels, the berries glistened in their syrupy juices. What an impressive sight. My husband and I sat at the kitchen table, eager to have a bite. How yummy. We loved it. The sweet yet slightly tart berries against the spongy texture of egg gave a bright taste to breakfast. The best part, according to my husband, is the buttery edge. Soon the Waukau pancake became our Sunday morning go-to item.

So where did the name come from? I did a Wikipedia search. Outside the town of Rushford, WI is an unincorporated area called Waukau. According to the census taken in 2000, 178 people live there. Perhaps this is where the pancake evolved.  

At any rate, I’m certain The Chocolate Martini Sisters would have delighted in the unusual dish. Emma, one of the sisters and known for her sweet tooth, would savor the mix of sugary and tart berries. Too bad it wasn’t on the menu at the Dulce Inn where they stayed in Candy, Cigarettes and Murder.

The following recipe is one that I’ve adapted over time in response to my particular taste. It takes only minutes to prepare. Eaten alone or paired with bacon or sausage, it feeds about three or four adults. Give it a chance. You won’t be disappointed.

 Waukau (Berry Pancake)                                   

1 cup flour

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup milk

2 eggs

½ tsp vanilla

3 T butter

Pint of raspberries

1/3 cup sugar

Oven heat: 375 degrees. Heat pan with butter in oven. (I use a heavy 10” stainless steel fry pan suitable for the oven)

Whisk flour and salt in medium bowl. Whisk milk, eggs and vanilla in small bowl.

Make a well in center of the flour mixture and add the milk mixture to the well. Whisk until combined. (A fork works well)

When pan is at oven temperature, pour batter into the oan. Scatter the berries over the batter, leaving one inch border around the edges. Sprinkle sugar over the berries, again avoiding the outer 1-inch border. Bake until the edges are puffed and deep golden brown, 40 – 45 minutes. 

Be careful not to burn your fingers when you take it from the oven.
