Reading and #Reviews (Dean, Guidoccio, Anderson)

I'm a writer, but I'm also a reader. Each month, I'll share with you what I'm reading and some reviews. My available time to read is limited because I write, but I love to curl up with a book or an eReader at night for the last hour of my day.

I tend to read what I write, but not exclusively. My current read is Juror #3 by James Patterson, a crime and law novel.  I also read romantic suspense, WWII historicals, mysteries, and some main stream character driven novels.

Here are some of the books I've read recently or in the not too distant past. Maybe you'll discover a new book or author!

End of Lonely Street by Alicia Dean
Romance

This is a short novella for those readers who love being transported back to the nostalgic 1950s. Toby quits school to return home and take care of her alcoholic mother. An old love, Noah, is there, too, which causes Toby another kind of problem. She finds solace in the music of her idol, Elvis, and the reader gets carried along. You’ll enjoy this short, sweet love story.

A Season for Killing Blondes by Joanne Guidoccio
Cozy Mystery

Gilda has started her own business after winning the lottery. But before her Grand opening is kicked off, a dead blonde is found on the premises. This is only one of several. Besides being a suspect, her old love from thirty years ago is the detective in charge.

This story is character driven with a splash of Italian that will capture you and keep you reading. It’s a cozy that got me from page one.

When Mountains Fall by Rolynn Anderson
Romantic Suspense

Camryn’s husband is dead. She and her son have been living with his wealthy parents. But her son wants to return to their home in isolated Waka Bay, British Columbia. For his mental health, she takes him home and together they fight to run the failing business while she tries to clear her husband’s name of murder. When she meets Finn, who anchors his boat in the bay every weekend, her life becomes more interesting and more tense as he has secrets of his own.

Ms. Anderson paints a vivid picture of this beautiful area while weaving a story of intrigue and romance.

Tiramisù: A Dessert with a #Wicked Past By Joanne Guidoccio #recipe #WickedWednesday

WICKED WEDNESDAY

It's always a pleasure to have Joanne guest on Discover... And it's a wickedly yummy spot today.

Several myths and legends surround this delectable dessert that has become a staple in Italian (and many non-Italian) restaurants worldwide.

Here’s my favorite legend…

In the late nineteenth century, the competition among the bordellos in Venice was extremely fierce. Hoping to attract more customers, one bordello offered espresso coffee as a complimentary beverage. Other bordellos followed suit.

As the competition escalated, so did the treats. Savoiardi Cookies (similar to lady fingers) and sweet liqueurs were added as further enticements. An enterprising Madam decided to combine all these ingredients—espresso coffee, savoiardi cookies, sweet liqueurs—with eggs and Mascarpone cheese.

The resulting confection was called Tiramisù (tih-ruh-mee-SOO) which means “Pick Me Up” in Italian. The patrons appreciated this energy booster that fortified them after their sexual encounters.

In one version of this story, the courtesans also treated themselves to Tiramisù between their amorous encounters. Another version suggests that the courtesans were not given this expensive treat.

If you’ve never tasted Tiramisù, imagine a light-mocha-flavored-whipped-cream concoction on lady finger pastries soaked in strong espresso coffee with a tantalizing hint of amaretto liqueur.

Here’s a tried-and-true recipe from my mother’s kitchen:

Ingredients

1 package lady fingers
250 ml Nutriwhip Lite
250 g Kraft Philadelphia cream cheese (*)
2 cups of cold, sweetened espresso coffee
½ cup amaretto liqueur
1 semi-sweet chocolate, grated

Directions
1.      Beat cream cheese using the electric mixer.
2.      In a separate bowl, whip the Nutriwhip Lite.
3.      In another bowl, combine the coffee and the amaretto.
4.      Combine cheese and Nutriwhip together.
5.      Cut the lady fingers in half, lengthwise.
6.      Place one layer at the bottom of a 9" x 13" rectangular pan.
7.      Sprinkle enough of the coffee/amaretto mixture to cover the lady fingers.
8.      Spread the cheese/Nutriwhip mixture on the lady fingers.
9.      Continue layering. The top layer must be the cheese mixture.
10.  Cover with grated chocolate.
11.  Refrigerate for 24 hours.

*Feel free to substitute Mascarpone cheese.

You can find Tiramisù and seven other dessert recipes in A Season for Killing Blondes, Book 1 in the Gilda Greco Mystery Series.

FREEDOM 53 by Joanne Guidoccio

FEARLESS FRIDAY
Please welcome my guest today, Joanne Guidoccio, with a courageous and heartwarming Fearless Friday.

In 1984, London Life Insurance came up with a uniquely Canadian slogan – Freedom 55.

Each time I saw the commercial of the middle-aged couple walking along the beach, enjoying a sunset, or engaging in water sports, I imagined my own retirement: extended holidays as a snowbird, launching a non-profit, starting a counseling practice. A little different but compelling enough to keep me dreaming of my own freedom years. Why not leave the workforce at age 55 and devote the remaining 25 to 30 years of my life to my passions.

Five months before my fiftieth birthday, a diagnosis of inflammatory cancer brought everything to a standstill. I survived, scarred but happy to be alive and appreciative of the many gifts cancer had brought.

I returned to my teaching position, with new determination. I would not wait until age 55 to retire. Instead, I
aimed for Freedom 53, a very early retirement, possible because of a generous teacher pension program.

As 2008 neared, I felt flutters of trepidation but remained committed to Freedom 53. For the most part, family and friends were supportive, but I could see flickers of doubt in their eyes. A few ventured to ask: “What on earth will you do?”

While some of my earlier dreams no longer fit, I did have a vague idea of what life on golden pond would look like. Sleeping in each morning. Leisurely breakfasts. New hobbies. Volunteering. Traveling.

These were my pat answers whenever anyone asked about my future plans. And at some point in the conversation I would work in one of my favorite quotations from Eckhart Tolle: “When you become comfortable with uncertainty, infinite possibilities open up in your life.”

I kept my writing dream, concocted at age eighteen, tucked away, fearing to even speak the words: “I want to write.” It sounded a bit pretentious and a definite stretch from my 31-year career as a mathematics and co-operative education teacher.

All that changed when I returned from a trip to Newfoundland. I put pen to paper and wrote an article about my adventures. To my surprise, it was picked up by the Waterloo Record and published two months after my retirement. I took that early publication as a sign from the universe and announced my intention to write.

I started journaling and filled large blocks of unscheduled time with workshops and online courses. Slowly, a writing practice emerged. At first, I focused on the nonfiction market and wrote book reviews and articles about careers, money management, wellness, personal growth and development. While I was delighted with the response from newspapers, magazines, and online publications, I wanted more.
“More” translated into a novel, and in my case, two novels: A Season for Killing Blondes and Between Land and Sea.

I had written the first draft of the cozy mystery during my “cancer” year and then filed it away. An integral part of my therapy, writing that novel helped me survive and thrive during the most challenging season of my life. It was now time to edit and polish the manuscript.

While querying, I distracted myself with another storyline. I wrote the first draft of Between Land and Sea (a paranormal romance about a middle-aged ex-mermaid) in three months and then spent a year editing and polishing. I was thrilled when Senior Editor Debby Gilbert of Soul Mate Publishing offered me a contract in 2013.

A year later, Editor Johanna Melaragno of The Wild Rose Press picked up A Season for Killing Blondes (Book 1 of the Gilda Greco Mystery Series). The novel was released in June 2015.
In September 2015, Soul Mate Publishing released The Coming of Arabella, the sequel to Between Land and Sea.

Right now, I’m polishing the final draft of Too Many Women in the Room (Book 2 of the Gilda Greco Mystery Series).
