Epic Adventure for Fearless Friday by Kim McMahill

FEARLESS FRIDAY

Please join me in welcoming Kim McMahill to Discover... on a Fearless Friday. What an adventure she had! And I'd say with her life, she's well equipped to write entertaining adventure stories. Enjoy her post and then check out her books...

I love adventure, nature, wildlife, travel, and learning about new cultures. Last winter I got the opportunity to experience all of those at once in one amazing trip. My husband and I flew in a small plane from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to San Ignacio Lagoon on the Baja Peninsula to participate in an immersive whale watching experience. The area is home to one of the few birthing and breeding lagoons in the world used by gray whales, making it an unparalleled place to view whales.

The trip started with a flight over stunning mountain and desert scenery as we headed up the Baja Peninsula. After landing on a dirt airstrip, we piled into a four-wheel drive vehicle for a short drive to whale camp. We stayed in a comfortable well-equipped tent on a shell-strewn beach, but most of our time was spent on the water.

Each day, we got up at sunrise and donned life jackets and tall rubber boots to wade into the water to board our small boat. The lagoon is a protected area, so we had to travel to a designated part of the lagoon for viewing and were limited to a set time on the water before having to go ashore. After a short time on shore, we would head back out for another round of whale watching.

The first day we saw a huge gray whale “spy-hopping,” which
is when a whale vertically lifts its head out of the water to look around. It only got better from there. Each day brought more whale sightings and on the last day, a mother brought her calf alongside the boat as we bobbed silently in the water watching.

Some days brought strong winds, forcing us off the water. The temperatures were cool most of the time, but the experience was well worth any discomfort or nail-biting boat rides.  Seeing these magnificent giants in such an amazing place was both humbling, awe-inspiring, and even a little frightening. The adult whales were much larger than our boat, so we were truly at their mercy. It was nothing less than a trip of a lifetime.

If you love adventure too, I hope you will check out, The Beartooth Chronicles. Below is a blurb about the series. The first three novels have been released. The fourth is scheduled for release in April and the fifth and final installment in September 2025. You can find all of my novels at major online book sellers including Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Kim-McMahill/e/B007IK0EJW/

The Beartooth Chronicles

In a world unraveling from relentless natural and human disasters, a determined group of individuals form a cooperative community built on sustainability and hope. Their mountain haven, Beartooth, offers safety and solace, but as environmental catastrophes escalate and humanity's darkest instincts emerge, their fragile sanctuary is threatened.

Now, the residents must confront an unyielding wave of challenges—both from within and beyond their borders—that will push their resilience, unity, and will to survive to the brink. Will their vision of a better future endure, or will the chaos of the world consume all they’ve built?

Follow Ashley and Caleb as they embark on a remarkable journey. Together, they learn about tragedy, grief, love, joy, and hope as they fight to survive in a hostile world.

Novels in the series in order: Refuge from the World, Above the Abyss, Isolated from Anarchy, Evil Below the Mountain, and Winter Resurgence.

Keep Writing by Mary Cunningham

MUSE MONDAY

Please welcome Mary Cunningham to Discover... Muse Monday. Aren't we glad she never gave up?

Andi Anna Jones, mediocre travel agent, with an inferiority complex about her job, her looks, and her single status, discovers her “inner sleuth” in Andi Anna Jones Mysteries.

I began writing at the age of seven. I assumed my poetry was excellent since my parents kept every misspelled stanza for me to discover (many) decades later. First lines like, Christmas, Christmas, lovely Christmas and When it snows, the cold wind blows, or my personal favorite, When I was a little girl like you, I went up in Sputnik number two. A budding Edna St. Vincent Millay, don’t you think? <snort>

Amazing I ever continued writing.

My third grade teacher must’ve seen something in my ability to put words together because the last day of school she said, “Mary, whatever you do, keep writing.” My high school freshman English teacher said, pretty much the same thing. And, I took their advice! Around age 50 I wrote my first book. Okay, so I’m a procrastinator. However, I’m still writing books, twenty-five years later.

Keeping with another piece of advice, to “write what you know’, the main character, Andi Anna Jones, is loosely based on a horrifying stint I had in North Miami Beach as a travel agent. I was truly awful and would duck behind my computer whenever a customer came through the door. (Yes, I really did that!)

Fortunately, I had a fantastic co-worker who pitched in when I got in a jam. Ellen recognized my fear from the first day, and graciously helped when I got stuck. So, if you haven’t guessed already, the protagonist in my series is based on my unpleasant experiences. Her sidekick, Ellie, is, of course, Ellen in the series, one of the best travel agents this side of the Mississippi.

Struggles aside, I made it through one whole year before we made the decision to move from the east coast of Florida to the west. I’m not sure who celebrated more when I walked out that agency door for the last time; me or that saint of a travel agency owner, Patty.

Writing the series about Andi, her competent assistant, Ellie, and the rest of the quirky cast, helped exorcise the experience from my memory by giving Andi a positive outlet for her curiosity and love of a good mystery. I’ve also shared many laughs along the way as Andi stumbles and crashes her way through danger, intrigue, romance, frustration, and closure.

So, dear reader, please be kind when you judge Andi’s incompetence and lack of confidence. She’s doing her best, as am I.

In an ironic turn of events, I taught travel and tourism in Fort Myers, Florida. Loved the job and was good at it! Go figure.

Blurb: Sazerac, Sleuth & Slay, An Andi Anna Jones Mystery, Book 2

It’s gonna be a great day! Or, so she thought.

Andi Anna Jones, so-so travel agent, amateur sleuth, doesn’t suspect her least favorite client, Stewart (The Pain) Payne, will set off circumstances that lead to disappearance and death.

After his wife is a no-show for a convention in New Orleans, his threat to sue Graves Travel for “ten times more than it’s worth”, and Andi’s wish to honor one of her late dad's requests, leads her to The Big Easy in search of Grace Payne.

Five unsolved murders, a body caught in a crawfish cage, and a mysterious candle, magic, and incense shop, takes Andi deep into the bayou on a hunt for clues.

Will another victim be added to a serial killer’s list, or is the main suspect closer to Andi than she thinks?

Excerpt:

Somewhere in the Bayou Luther woke up raring to go for a change. Wasn’t sure why, ’cause he hated, hated the job! It was nasty. He stunk to high heaven by mid-morning. Hells Bells! Sweat had already collected on strands of hair stuck to his grimy forehead. He adjusted the straps of his faded bibs so they fit snug to his shoulders. Couldn’t have a strap fall down and pin his arm at the wrong time. More than once, he’d lost his catch cause of a careless slip.

He reckoned the only thing that got him up and moving, so all-fired early, was because today was Friday, and he figured on adding enough money to finally take Marlene out for a real dinner and some Zydeco music and dancing afterwards. And, no, those nasty mini lobsters he depended on for his livelihood wouldn’t be on their plates—leastways, not his!

His toes squirmed in those hot rubber boots, but the alternative meant sloshing around barefoot through the rice fields bordering the briny water. He’d sooner have hot feet than grimy ones. “Lawdy, Luther, you’re all fish-smellin’,” his going-on-four-years gal complained on more than one occasion. “Don’t you even think ’bout walkin’ ’cross my clean floor ’til you wash those feet!” The boots he could just kick off outside and hose down, so he put up with the discomfort. He carried an extra trap on this trip in case the one he’d left the night before was full. Wishful thinkin’ probly.

The fresh dry dog food he used for bait, he’d had to sneak out of Molly’s bag when she wasn’t looking, or she’d snap at him for stealing her dinner. Smart dog, that one. Ornery as an old mule, though. The darkening sky spit rain by the time he got to the lake, but the clouds didn’t look angry; just mischievous enough to make the morning miserable and the swamp bank, slippery. He’d have to be careful he didn’t end up in the water with the critters.

Locating the trap line, he carefully tied it to a cypress tree, and pulled…and pulled. Something flashed in the sunlight, just below the surface of the water. “Son of a biscuit eater! Must be snagged on a branch.” Or maybe he’d caught the mother of all crawfish! Sure, Luther. Dream on. He moved sideways toward a large log, anchored his foot for leverage, and pulled again. The trap loosened and moved through the water, but something still dragged it down. “Dadgummit!”

He secured the rope and pulled off his boots. No choice but to wade in to see what was holding his “bounty” hostage. His toes squished in soggy mud about four feet offshore. Hoped he didn’t step on a sharp rock, or worse. Three months back, Luther’d almost lost a toe to an irritable snapping turtle. One vicious pull and the trap sprang free. A mass of Spanish moss came with it. “Now what? This ain’t my day.” Luther would never be mistaken for a NASA engineer, but his ability to process the scene was slow, even for him. “Dammitall, dat ain’t moss. Wuz a wig doin’ in da lake?” People had no sense of decency when it came to littering. What next? A voodoo mask and top hat? Grabbing the cage with his fingers, he gave one last tug and yelped with the same intensity as Molly that time she ran under a storage shed and met the business end of a skunk. The sight before him, bobbing with the current, sent him reeling backwards into the murky water.

Wicked Wonderful Travel by Margot Johnson #romance #travel

 WICKED WEDNESDAY

Thank you, Brenda, for inviting me to be your guest this Wicked Wednesday. I’m happy to join you for some mid-week fun based on the wicked travel adventures in Let it Simmer and in my own life.

So glad to have you, Margot. What a great idea for a series. Please tell us about it.

Merilee’s tours are inspired by my love of my home province of Saskatchewan, Canada and the many wickedly wonderful places to visit here. Many people are familiar with Canadian tourist attractions like Banff and Niagara Falls, but here are just a few of the scenic and exciting options you’ll find in Saskatchewan…

Moose Jaw, SK – a city with a small-town feel, I set my first book, Love Takes Flight, there. Legend has it that Al Capone hid out in tunnels under the city, and it has a great mineral spa for a relaxing soak.

Waskesiu, SK (Merilee’s latest destination) – This touristy town sits on the shores of a lake in Prince Albert National Park in Northern Saskatchewan. Our family visits every year to breathe the fresh, pine-scented air, hang out at the beach, and watch for wildlife. Elk often cruise the town, and you might see a bear along the road.

Madge Lake, SK – Another beautiful lake setting in Saskatchewan where our family has started an
annual holiday tradition. A nice beach, golf course, and miniature golf course appeal to all ages.

Eastend, SK – This small town is best known for the nearby discovery of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton nicknamed "Scotty" in 1994. A few years ago, my husband, Rick, and I stayed in a country cottage and had fun exploring the area.

Regina, SK – a city of about 250,000, it’s the capital city of Saskatchewan with many attractions including beautiful Wascana Park and the RCMP Heritage Centre and police training academy.

Have you visited Saskatchewan, Canada? If not, I hope you now have a new destination to add to your travel wish list. What’s a special place near you or a place you love to visit?

About Let it Simmer, book three in the Merilee Tours series…

A sensible, mature widow like Susan doesn’t belong on a tour bus seated next to her high school crush. Thirty years later, Phil is as charming and handsome as ever, but she doesn’t need a new partner, especially not a love-’em-and-leave-’em guy.

Happily single, Phil tags along to celebrate his matchmaking mom’s eightieth birthday. She’s embarrassingly persistent, but maybe she’s right he should, finally, settle down with the right woman.

Susan only wants a little family time with her two cousins and a scenic vacation to Northern Saskatchewan…so why does she feel like a fluttery teenage girl? Can Phil spark even more excitement than games, scenery, and wildlife?

Not Your Greenhorn's Arizona

Although I’ve lived in other places, my heart resides in the west. Born and raised in Arizona, I have a love for the rural and small-town atmosphere from the southern desert to the northern high country.

Although most will conjure cactus and desert when they think of Arizona, there are snowy ski slopes and beautiful prairies too. This is the country of the Wild Horse Peaks novels.

Scene setting is one of my favorite parts of creating a story. I’ve chosen to write most of my stories in Arizona, a setting I know well. But keep in mind, Arizona is as varied a landscape as you can

imagine. A couple of years ago, we had a friend visit from the Midwest. He’d never been to Arizona. We picked him up at the airport in Phoenix: hot, low elevation desert covered with cacti and creosote bushes. In my humble-born-in-Phoenix opinion—boring and unattractive. We drove to the small farm where we lived at the time, two hours north. The drive took us through the Sonoran desert with our saguaro cacti, rugged mountains and scrub pine as well as forested areas to an elevation of 5,300 feet. We then dropped down to 4,400 feet and encountered golden

prairie where the antelope roam. The following day, we drove him east through more mountains heavy with a history of mining. From Jerome, hanging on the side of Cleopatra Hill, we looked out on the Verde (green) Valley to the red rock beauty of Sedona. He was speechless. His comment was how amazing to pass through so many kinds of landscapes in only a few hours.

The varied landscapes and western flavor are some of the reasons I’m drawn to setting my stories in Arizona. If you’re unfamiliar with this part of the country, I hope my stories entrench you in a new experience.

One more note about setting the scene. If you are familiar with Arizona, you might recognize some of my cities and places but by a different name. I like to sculpt my world using the inspiration of a real place and then mold it into the world of my characters.

Ready to Travel! by Vicki Batman #FearlessFriday #travel #HolidayFiction

FEARLESS FRIDAY

Traveling has been a fearless endeavor ever since COVID made the scene. Vicki's family finally took the plunge.

Munich
After three years of Covid fear, our three-time postponed trip was back on. First, we traveled to Munich, Germany. With family members, we visited Octoberfest. Expecting excessive partying, we were hesitant about going, but we’re glad we did. The grounds were so colorful! And the beer halls were decorated differently. Lots of fun food stands and thrilling rides were situated outside. The event reminded us of our State Fair with an exception—no fried food. LOL.

Next, we were bused to Oberammergau for the Passion Play which was held every ten years, but rescheduled because of the virus. The actors spoke and sang in German which was a bit challenging; however, all was beautifully done.

Vienna
In Vienna, we were able to see the Lippizaner stallions at the Spanish Riding School. This has been a dream for me ever since I read Airs Above the Ground by Mary Stewart. That night, we attended a Strauss concert.

In Krumlov, we explored a Medieval castle, ate lunch, and shopped. I found a handmade shop where I indulged in Christmas gifts for the family. Our trip ended in Budapest. We loved it there. Our hotel sat on the ruins of a former monastery and next door to a cathedral. We walked tons of miles to many great places and ate yummy food.

The past three years put the world’s lives on hold. We’re glad we could make our trip finally happen.

Are you traveling for the holidays?

In between your holiday activities, curl up with these holiday stories:

Love blossoms in the small town of Sommerville in these heartwarming holiday tales, filled with fun and forever possibilities.

The Great Fruitcake Bake-off: When a five-time baking champion teams up with her new neighbor for The Great Fruitcake Bake-off, they discover baking a prize-winning entry is complicated, bad guys are plotting to take the crown, and first prize isn't just about a ribbon.

Christmas Romeo: When two feuding co-workers win Christmas river cruises at the company holiday party, they discover each other isn't so bad after all.

Twinkle Lights: When the owner of a Christmas tree stand has a heart attack, a do-gooder and a reformed high school delinquent-turned-lawyer meet the challenges of running the establishment; yet, when revenue goes missing, fingers are pointed.

Wicked Fun with Margot Johnson #WickedWednesday #romance #travel

WICKED WEDNESDAY

Margot Johnson knows how to have some wicked fun. She made me smile and you will too. A perfect way to spend Wicked Wednesday.

Thank you, Brenda, for inviting me to be your guest this Wicked Wednesday. I’m happy to join you for some mid-week fun based on wicked travel adventures in Let it Melt and in my own life.

In Let it Melt, Merilee hosts a Sweetheart Tour, a bus trip that includes more than a few surprises.

Merilee’s tour business is inspired by my love of travel and the wicked adventures I’ve enjoyed along the way including this one…

A few years ago my husband, Rick, and I travelled to California to attend a U2 concert (Rick’s favorite band), cheer at two ballgames, visit Disneyland, and tour San Francisco. All those experiences were more than enough fun for one vacation, but I wanted to attend a taping of a game show, too.

My wish came true when we managed to get tickets to the TV game show “Let’s Make a Deal,” hosted by Wayne Brady. All the audience members are supposed to wear costumes, but the morning of the show, we still didn’t know what we could possibly dress up in. Then I noticed a flowered top in my suitcase, and an idea popped to mind. We stopped at a bargain store on the way and loaded up on artificial flowers which we attached to our hair and clothing and transformed ourselves into a garden.

I knew chances were slim, but I hoped I might get selected as a contestant. We had a great time joking and laughing with the other audience members and experiencing how a show is taped, but the show was nearing the end with only one more game to go. Feeling a little deflated, I forced myself to smile and clap while I waited to hear the announcement of the final contestants.

“Where’s the lady with flowers in her hair?” Wayne Brady’s voice boomed over the audience as he pointed in my direction. Shocked, I jumped up and bolted down the stairs to the stage with my heart pounding. Slightly stunned, and with music, lights, and applause bombarding me, I launched into a game which involved selecting numbers to reveal a picture of a car. I wish I could say I drove home in a brand new car, but I came within one number of winning. If only I had chosen seven instead of four. Yes, losing was a bit of a letdown, but I’ll never forget the experience…a wickedly good time.

For my next adventure, I hope to head to London, England. Two years ago I received an invitation to one of the Queen’s Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace, something I’ve wanted to do for years. Unfortunately, the events were cancelled the past two years, but I have fingers crossed that they’ll return soon and I’ll get the chance to rub elbows with royalty.

About Let it Melt, book two in the Merilee Tours series…

How on earth did Jill, a single divorcee, land on a romantic Valentine's Sweetheart Tour for couples? Worse, she’s paired with Jack, her daughter’s brash father-in-law, and everyone thinks he’s her valentine. Stranded in a Canadian prairie blizzard, how soon can she kiss this awkward evening goodbye?

Long divorced, Jack would love to charm Jill with his toned body and dynamic personality, but his wisecracks and obsession with fitness get in the way—especially when he nabs a post at the same school where she teaches.

Even the most romantic month of the year can’t melt their differences and sweeten Jill's feelings….or can it?

Wicked Meal, Wicked Delight by Hanna Park #romance #travel #WickedWednesday

WICKED WEDNESDAY

Please welcome Wicked Wednesday's guest, Hanna Park. Food and romance in a wickedly beautiful setting. Enjoy!

A month in the Algarve of Portugal! Time spent––to enjoy life, to relax.

And to research an area rich in history. How can I describe the endless landscape, the walks on the Algarve cliffs? The ocean view goes on for days! And how about a romantic sunset stroll along the boardwalk? What more could an aspiring author need? Ah! Great food! Let’s talk about the food––always to die for––always, a wicked delight!

Bacalhau, Portuguese Cod Fish, made with simple ingredients and prepared to perfection––a family recipe handed down by generations.

On our first evening in Carvoeiro, the husband and I made our way to the Restaurante Casa Algarvia, a family-style restaurant recommended by our hotelier as authentic Portuguese fare. This restaurant became our go-to place for dinner because the meals were spectacular and the staff so very welcoming.

For our very first meal in Portugal, we ordered Bacalhau. Our server, Christina, promptly warned us
that Bacalhau is salted cod, soaked for twenty-four hours to remove the salt and then roasted. This fantastic meal was served on a clay platter, loaded with sautéed peppers and onion, olives and baby potatoes, doused in olive oil, with sunny side hard-boiled eggs. This meal was wicked!!! We sampled many other beautiful dishes at Casa Algarvia, and I cannot fail to mention the Fish Cataplana, a seafood stew served in a hinged copper bowl––a mouth-watering delight!

The wine poured freely, setting my imagination on fire, giving me a home base for Tiegan and Tomás to meet. Finding Tiegan became a reality within those muted orange walls.

Finding Tiegan

Book Blurb:

A holiday in the Algarve of Portugal...sunshine...fun-shine. It's what I need. It's time to be me. Time to find the woman I was before the nightmares, outlandish dreams, and sleepwalking. But I wasn't expecting to find Tomás Ferreira, a man made for pleasure. And now, my heart throbs with unfulfilled excitement, fire burns in my belly, and swirling flames lick my thighs. I'm a glorious mess.

Where did Tiegan Moss come from? And why is she suddenly here on the day of the dead, the day the door to the otherworld swings open, the day the veil is thin? I'd hidden in the shadows, content, a life barely lived. You've changed everything. You make me want. You make my blood sing. Lost in your kaleidoscope eyes, trapped in the pout of your lips, I can't escape. And I don't like it one bit.

Can our two haunted souls find a future together?

Book Excerpt:

Three months is a long time, and I can’t eat out every single day. But I’m not much of a cook—I barely function in the kitchen. Back home, I live on prepared food and takeout. My mother’s voice rings in my head—Tiegan, sweetheart, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Aaron’s pretty face flashes through my mind.

I stroll the supermarket aisles, making a mental list of what to buy. I fill my cart with the basics: granola, orange pekoe, yogurt. I buy eggs. There are so many ways to ruin eggs. I find the coffee. I can’t live without coffee. As I pour the beans through the grinder, I close my eyes, breathing in the rich aroma of dark roast.

Taking center stage in the seafood section is a mile-high stack of dried, salted, and cured cod, bacalhau. Tomás Ferreira—what a charming piece of work. I can’t believe how taken I was by the moment. Why did I lose myself so completely? Physical attraction? Jet lag? The wine? It was the wine. I drank the whole bottle.

I wait at the front end of the store while the cashier rings me through. The entrance doors swing open. His scent hits me like a ton of bricks. My body reacts, hot and cold all at once.

“Tomás. How are you? How was practice today?” The cashier turns her attention away from my groceries. Apparently, they know each other.

“Looking good, Mary. The kids are working well together: team players, everyone.”

Holy hell! Can she not focus on the task at hand?

Fearless Traveler by Kayelle Allen #FearlessFriday #military #travel

FEARLESS FRIDAY

I'm so happy to have the amazing author, Kayelle Allen on Discover... today. She has a great tale of fearlessness. Enjoy!

24 years old, in love, and fearless: Kayelle Allen shares her European journey

In 1975 I was 24 years old and fearless. Which is why I made a trip to Europe without buying an airline ticket, with only $400 in my pocket.

I was active duty military back then (Navy) and so was my husband. He was stationed on the John F Kennedy, doing a cruise in the Mediterranean while I was stationed in San Diego. Each was completely half-way around the world from the other.

We'd only been married since December of 1973, and it was now October 1975. He'd left on the cruise the day before Valentine's Day. (Thank you, Uncle Sam.) So when I had the chance to take 30 days of leave and go visit him, I jumped into action.

If you're active duty, you can hop onto a military flight at no cost, as long as there's an empty seat. I paid for a flight from San Diego to Pennsylvania, got a shuttle bus to the Air Force base there, and put my name in for a flight. I was a lower priority than someone reporting for duty, but if there was an open seat, I was in.

A retired couple who'd been there for weeks trying to get a flight told me it might take a long time. I was higher priority than they were, so I had a chance. But I convinced them that I was getting on a plane that very night, and for them to check out of their hotel and stay in the airport with me. One of those gut feeling decisions that you make with no reason. I am intuitive, and I had a good feeling about it.

About 3:30 in the morning, an unexpected flight came in that was heading to Germany non-stop. I wanted to go to Naples, Italy, but Germany was a lot closer, so I said I'd go. The other couple came with me. The plane took off a little after 4:00 with empty seats. The three of us had been the only people in the airport.

Once I arrived, I met an active duty couple who were flying to Aviano, quite a long way north of Naples, but still in Italy. I got on that flight with no trouble. The couple invited me to stay overnight at their place because there were no flights scheduled for 2 days. I joined them for an evening out with friends and ate the best pizza of my entire life. I hadn't slept well in a few days, so once I stretched out and closed my eyes, I was gone.

When the next flight was scheduled, they drove me to the base, and I thanked them and checked in. I was on a flight within an hour or so. This one went straight into Naples.

An American guy who was living in Naples said he'd show me the hotel if I'd pay the taxi fare for both of us, which I did. Had a wild ride through the city. He told me that the people in Naples start their car and blow their horns. It was noisy enough that I had no trouble believing that.

Next day, I got a ride to the Navy base where the liberty launch (a smaller ship) was bringing people in for leave. I was beside myself when I saw my husband. We had quite the unforgettable reunion, believe me.

This was all back before the internet or cell phones. One call home from Italy cost us $99 because we talked so long. We didn't have text messaging. We had to communicate where we'd be and when by mail, days ahead.

Looking back, it was a gutsy thing to do. I wouldn't dream of it now. But back then, I was young, in love, and fearless.
