Dreaming Up A Book...Really! by HM Thomas #inspiration #romance

MUSE MONDAY

It's special to have a return guest. Today, the talented HM Thomas joins us for Muse Monday on Discover... She's sharing her answer to a question all authors are posed often. Read on and enjoy!

Thank you, Brenda, for having me back on your blog. I’m so glad to be here talking about where I get my ideas for books.

Thankfully, I’m one of those lucky writers who usually doesn’t have to look too hard for story ideas. That’s not to say that I don’t have to beat my head against the desk sometimes to get those ideas to work—it’s just that the initial seeds seem to be everywhere I look. I listen to people’s conversations, I hear songs that don’t tell me enough, I watch strangers, especially other couples, trying to figure them out . . . and I dream.

Many of my stories have come from a kernel of a dream, a flash of memory from sleep that haunts me until I have no other choice but to ask myself what the rest of the story is.

Island of Secrets and Scars was no different. While on vacation with my family at the beach I had a dream about a tidal wave that hovered over me as I stood in the sand. When the wave finally crashed, I was submerged in water, fighting for my life and surrounded by dead bodies. I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with water. On the one hand, it feeds my spirit and my creativity. And on the other hand, I’m convinced it will be my downfall. I respect water and its power, but I also fear it.  Because of this fear, I have dreamed of tidal waves for years.

But this dream was different. The vision of me standing on shore with the wave looming over me followed me through the day. It tapped me on the shoulder while I fed my baby, and whispered my name as I played on the beach with my preschoolers—it demanded my attention. And so I started asking “who was this woman standing on the beach?” “Was she afraid?” “Why did she stand there facing something so much stronger than herself?” “What kind of woman would do that?”

And Dr. Cameron Crawford was born. In Island of Secrets and Scars, Cameron flees her old life after an attack that kills her unborn child and alters her relationship with her fiancée. Although she’s afraid of the ocean, she ends up on an obscure island off the coast of South America. Years later, a plane crashes on her island, and she must call for doctors to help care for her friends and family. Ultimately, the plane crash proves to cause more problems than she anticipated, when it draws people from her past to the island, and with them comes threats to her new life and the secrets she thought she’d buried in the sand beneath her.

Excerpt

Even from the shore, Cameron heard the happiness in Esme’s voice when she replied, “Everyone is well. The others are helping Aimee with the garden this morning. Where’s Arabella?” she called as her husband cast a net into the water with long-practiced efficiency.

Cameron turned back toward the rocks, surprised her daughter hadn’t already appeared to see the Huntes. Esme and Brodie were as close to an aunt and uncle as the girl would ever have. She never missed an opportunity to chat with them or finagle a trip on their fishing boat.

“I don’t know. She—"

The rest of her reply died on her lips as the sound of an engine split the peaceful silence around her. She raised her gaze to the sky, where a plane approached. Aircrafts weren’t unheard of over their small island, but since the modest airstrip on the big island sat on the opposite side, most planes rarely traveled in this direction. And when they did, they were much higher than this one.

From the plane came a haunting click click click—a sound Cameron had hoped to never hear again. Suddenly, a face flashed into her mind. The same face she’d seen in her dream just hours before—that of the young, helpless boy who’d stared at her from across a jungle with regret and fear in his eyes before fire erupted between them.

Her heart lurched into her throat, keeping the scream bubbling inside her from escaping. As she swung her gaze from the plane to her friends’ boat, fear grabbed hold of her with talon-like fingers.

“Esme,” she screamed fruitlessly. Her voice couldn’t compete with the sudden explosion overhead.

The plane blew apart, sending metal and flames shooting through the air. Cameron stood, frozen, as a tire flew past her. Pieces of the plane’s body dropped into the sea. A small wave swelled, coming toward where she stood rooted in the sand.

Move,” her brain screamed. But she couldn’t stop watching.

Finally, her body responded, and she turned and sprinted toward the rocks. Water licked at her heels, then rose to her calves. Fear gripped her, trying to keep her immobile as the water splashed against her legs. Until she’d moved to this island, she’d avoided the ocean at all costs. She didn’t trust any of the elements. How could anyone trust anything so powerful and unpredictable? But, as she’d learned in Africa, avoidance didn’t equal safety. Her back still bore the scars of the fire that had ravaged her body and left her womb empty. Shaking away the fear clawing at her, she pushed forward. Above her, the tops of palm trees burned. Their limbs crackled with flames. Once she reached the rocks, she climbed atop the nearest one and looked over her shoulder. Debris filled the water that only moments before had been tranquil. Now, fire burned on the surface as gas and oil leaked from the plane. She recognized the sinking and burning pieces of wood amongst the plane’s remains as Brodie’s boat, Kè Mwen. My Heart.

Blurb

Betrayed by her fiancée and reeling from an attack that killed their unborn child and left her injured and scarred, obstetrician Cameron Crawford flees to a remote island in search of the healing and peace that elude her. Six years later, she thinks she’s found both serving as the island doctor and raising her young daughter.

Dr. Ian Gauthier has never stopped searching for the fiancée who disappeared six years ago. He’s all but given up hope of ever actually finding her, until a plane crashes on a remote island, and he and his team of doctors are called in to assist the island’s doctor—the woman he’s mourned for half a decade.

Cameron thought the plane crash would be her biggest obstacle, but the accident draws two men from her past to the island. While one man threatens the fragility of her still healing heart, the other threatens the safety of the family she’d die to protect.  In order to save one, she may have to sacrifice the other.

Villains to Hate, Villains to Love by HM Thomas #WickedWednesday #romance

WICKED WEDNESDAY

Oh, good, a fun post about evil characters by HM Thomas! Discover... Wicked Wednesday and we're talking villains...you might like?

Villains. They come in all shapes, sizes and levels of villainy. In my books I’ve had a club owner/drug dealer/pimp that was kind of lovable, a beautiful human trafficker, and an abusive ex. As an author, creating obvious bad guys isn’t that difficult. Throw in someone like Cruella de Vil with her furs and maniacal eyes (you’ve seen the cartoon, right?)  and you don’t have to work very hard to get readers, or characters, to realize this is the person they’re supposed to hate.

But I like a villain who, if we didn’t know better, we might like. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not talking about an anti-hero or a truly good character who’s had to make horrible choices and just comes across as bad. I’m talking a depraved, cruel person with a polished veneer.

In my latest novel, Island of Secrets and Scars, Victor Roberts fits that bill. The story’s main character is Cameron Crawford, an American doctor living on a remote island off the east coast of South America, has heard stories of the nefarious Victor Roberts and, as a doctor, seen first-hand the effects of his cruelty. Still, when she sees the man for the first time she can’t help but notice that he’s handsome and even smells good. These facts make her angry, because what she sees isn’t at all what she expects and she believes that’s unfair.

But that’s how a “good” villain sucks us in. If Victor Roberts was an overweight, toothless, smelly mobster dressed in a sweat-stained tank top, people would stay away from him. But, turn him into a good-looking charmer dressed in a suit with nice hands and a dimple and suddenly people want to get close—and that’s when he strikes.

In Island of Secrets and Scars, Victor is beyond redemption, but he serves as a catalyst for major changes and maybe even some redemption for those whose lives he’s affected.

Excerpt

“I’m Victor Roberts. And you are?”

His hand was large. His fingers long and thick but not fat. Cameron imagined when clenched, his fist would be massive. She knew for certain it would cause maximum damage. Yet the appendage looked so harmless with its clean, close-cropped nails. She raised her gaze to stare into the eyes of the man who’d ruined Keso’s sister. The man Keso had vowed to ruin in return. A corner of the man’s mouth lifted in a smirk, revealing a dimple. Her stomach twisted and bile rose in her throat. Coughing, she tried to keep the sour liquid from escaping. Roberts dropped his hand, then moved closer.

“Are you okay?” He placed a hand on her forearm.

She jerked away. The dimple had disappeared. “I’m fine. Is there something you need here?” For the sake of everyone on the island, she needed him to get on his way.

“You have Americans in your clinic. I need to see if any of them are my friends.” He leaned forward, as if heading for the door.

Cameron remained firm. “They’re not.”

The man stood only inches from her now. His cologne tickled her nose. Surprisingly, he smelled nice. Unfair. A man like Victor Roberts should smell like the garbage he was.

“I’ll see for my—”

“No.” Her daughter was inside the clinic. She’d die before she willingly allowed this monster near her baby.

His jaw tightened. His nostrils flared.

“The only Americans are tourists from boats,” she explained. “Your plane passengers are on the beach . . . or the water.” They’d pulled out any bodies they’d found, but Cameron’s priority had been the living. No one on the plane had fit that category.

“Well, I’d like to see for myself, if you don’t mind.” He tried to push past her.

Cameron stiffened her legs, rooted to the spot. “You’re not coming into the clinic.”

The men behind the intruder inched forward. He lifted a hand to stop them. A slow smile stretched his lips. She dropped her gaze before that damn dimple showed itself again.

“Dr. Crawford, I need to see who is inside this clinic.” He spat the word. “You can allow me of your own free will or…”

He didn’t have to continue. She knew what happened after or. Keira happened after or. Still, she couldn’t let him inside.

Her knees shook. “I’m sorry, but I can’t allow that. There are rules. Laws. That prohibit me from revealing the identity of patients.”

He laughed, so close to her face she could smell the mint on his breath. “Laws?” He turned to his companions, still laughing. “Did she say laws?”

The men shrugged.

Roberts turned back to her. Stone-cold anger replaced the humor on his face. “I am the law, Dr. Crawford.”

HM Thomas combated her perfectly normal childhood by creating her own drama and excitement on paper. By the time she entered college, she’d been a creator of horror, mystery and suspense, but it wasn’t until her own Happily Ever After that she delved into romance. Now she’s convinced each of her characters needs one as well, no matter how much she might torture them in the process.

When HM’s not writing, she enjoys traveling and exploring new places with her husband, three children and rescue dog. On a good day, she can be found in a comfy chair with a book. On a really good day that chair’s in the sand or by a campfire.

The Problems of Romance by HM Thomas #romance #NewRelease

MUSE MONDAY

I am thrilled to have as my guest blogger today, HM Thomas. You all know I'm an author. You might also know I'm an editor. This year, in addition to my free lance editing, I'm editing for Champagne Book Group. HM Thomas is one of the authors I am privileged to work with. Her book, What We Deserve is the first of the books I've edited to be released. So sit back and enjoy learning how she came to write this great romance.

I love romance novels. I love the buildup and the big bang and the happily ever after, but I can’t just do straight romance. I like struggles. I like problems. Sometimes those problems come from the couple’s own issues. Sometimes they come from someone else’s lies or attempts to break the pair apart. Sometimes it’s their occupations or their past. And sometimes it’s a whole host of these things together. I’ve been accused of liking to make my characters bleed (sometimes literally), but I like to think I give them a nice payoff.

When I first began writing my novel, What We Deserve I had just returned to my hometown and was teaching English in a nearby high school. Eventually it hit me that at some point, I’d probably teach the children of my former classmates. I wondered what that might be like. Would the daughter of the perfect princess from my high school days be just as perfect as her mother had been? Would the son of the jock shun sports and instead lose himself reading in the back of my class? What if the same people who made my teenage years hell ended up with children more like the girl I had been than the teenagers their parents had been? But then those questions got me thinking – what if the stakes were higher? What if I wasn’t just interacting with these young people as a teacher? What if there was more at stake than grades? I explored these questions in my novel.

In What We Deserve, Miranda Lawson is a therapist returning to her job working with victims of traumatic events.  Her return puts her working side-by-side with her ex-husband, Detective Logan Pearson. An ex that she has never gotten over. Her first big case involves the assault and possible rape of a girl with ties to Miranda’s past. A past she’d hoped to keep buried. Although drawn to the girl, Miranda is torn between keeping her own secrets and uncovering the girl’s. Throw in the sparks still between Miranda and Logan, the fact Logan recently slipped up and slept with a rookie and a whole lot of stubbornness, and you can guarantee there will be some bloodshed before the characters get the happily ever after they deserve.

 Blurb –

Two years ago, victim therapist Miranda Lawson lost everything after an assignment left a victim dead and her marriage in shambles. Now, she’s determined to get her former life back, including her old job and possibly her ex-husband.

Detective Logan Pearson’s job is the only thing he’s managed to not screw up in the past few years. Until he realizes the mystery woman he slept with is a new recruit, on the same day his ex-wife returns to their precinct.

Miranda’s return proves both treat and trial as the two realize their divorce has done nothing to diminish the fire still burning between them. When a girl arrives at the station beaten and mute, Miranda realizes a nightmare from her past now threatens her future. She and Logan must overcome the pain of their pasts to start again and ensure everyone gets what they deserve.

Excerpt -

Terror kicked in Miranda’s chest. “What do you hope to get from this?” She didn’t need to ask, but she needed to keep the girl talking. Sophia wanted the rapist to pay. She wanted him to be as terrified and helpless as she’d been. Miranda crossed the threshold.

Sophia shook her head. “Stay out, Miranda. You’ve been good to me. I don’t want you to see what I have to do.”

“Sophia.” She sharpened her voice, her stern “cut the bullshit voice, but the girl didn’t even glance her way. “You don’t have to do anything. He admitted he raped you. No one will doubt you now. This whole nightmare is over.”

The girl laughed, an eerie laugh, and Miranda’s blood ran cold.

“You’re right, it is.” She sounded distant. Defeated. “I can’t get away from what he did to me. I can’t eat, sleep. I can’t even look at myself. I shower with my eyes closed.”

She’d said these same things during their sessions.

“You’re still beautiful.” The girl had been quietly, classically beautiful before the rape. Over the past year, her inner strength had carved her into a woman with wise eyes and a beautiful smile. “He didn’t change you, Sophia. You’re still as special as you ever were.”

Her patient’s hand tightened on the gun. “No. He ruined me. The girl I was is damaged. She’s dead.” Her gaze flickered to Miranda for a split second. She squeezed the trigger.

Miranda froze as the bullet pierced Bobby Blair’s skull. Blood splattered the headboard behind him. Footsteps pounded up the staircase.

She swung her gaze to the victim turned vigilante. The desperate girl already held the gun to her temple.

Miranda inched forward. “Sophia, don’t—”

Reading and #Reviews (Cockrell, Thomas, Ludlum)

I'm a writer, but I'm also a reader. Each month, I'll share with you reviews of present and past reads. My available time to read is limited because I write, but I love to curl up with a paperback or an eBook at night for the last hour of my day.

I tend to read what I write, but not exclusively. Besides Romantic Suspense, I read crime and law novels, WWII historicals, mysteries, and some main stream character driven books.

Here are some of the books I've read recently or in the not too distant past. Maybe you'll discover a new book or author!

Creature in the Night by Connie Cockrell

Fantasy

This is a short that’s full of entertainment. I was taken back to scary childhood fantasy. The tale was whimsical and entertaining. Ms. Cockrell painted vivid word pictures that kept me reading. Well done.

The Bourne Identity: Jason Bourne, Book 1 of the Jason Bourne Series by Robert Ludlum

Suspense

His memory is a blank. His bullet-ridden body was fished from the Mediterranean Sea. His face has been altered by plastic surgery. A frame of microfilm has been surgically implanted in his hip. Even his name is a mystery.

I read this book years ago. Might be time to read it again. I actually saw the movie first, and for once I found the book and the movie equally entertaining. A great read.
